The Beekeeper’s meeting By Katy Alston
The Beekeeper’s meeting - a greetings card illustrated with a light hearted appreciation of Botticelli’s masterpiece ‘Primavera’
Artists Statement
When I used to keep bees I would go to our local beekeepers’ meetings where we’d look at others’ hives, eat cake and generally have a good afternoon!
This image is based on the wonderful painting by Botticelli, ‘Primavera’ and I used the characters he painted to tell another story.
Venus in the middle is the apiary owner who is attempting to direct proceedings, stood on a platform. The woman with the bee-smoker is Flora, who now has the power of the flame!
Zephyrus is attempting to gain the interest of Chloris by telling her just how to light the smoker.
Mercury ( god of financial gain) on the left is prodding the swarm and the three graces are putting up the gazebo ( always necessary for tea on a sunny afternoon) I hope you enjoy this light hearted appreciation of Botticelli’s masterpiece!
