Chang O, the Chinese moon goddess, was exiled to the moon because of her need to obtain divinity. With a hare (the endangered Hainan Hare in this depiction) as her only companion, she spent much time alone contemplating life's mysteries beneath a Cassia tree.

Chang O represents the need to go within to gain knowledge, withdrawal to better contemplate life, and the taking ownership for the divine within us.
